University of the West of England

The University is easy to reach from most areas of the country, situated close to the M4 and M5 motorways. There are also excellent train and coach connections. Bristol Parkway station is very convenient for the University's Frenchay Campus and there are regular buses directly to campus. There is free bus travel for students in UWE Bristol-owned accommodation. London is just 90 minutes from Bristol by train. Travel by coach is easy too, with an extensive network of routes. Bristol Airport has direct flights to many UK and European cities. UWE Bristol has an outstanding reputation for its user-led research applicable to real world problems.

 In 1595 the Bristol Society of Merchant Venturers' Navigation School is founded. In 1969 Bristol Polytechnic is founded. In 1992 Bristol Polytechnic gains University status, becoming the University of the West of England (UWE). Today UWE Bristol is the largest provider of Higher Education in the South West of England. There has been strong emphasis over the years on building close partnerships with businesses and organisations locally, nationally and internationally.  UWE Bristol has three Campuses (Frenchay, Glenside and Bower Ashton) around Bristol, plus further afield UWE Gloucester and Hartpury College


Over the past 10 Year UWE Bristol has more than doubled its research income from organisations such as research councils, charities and the government. The RAE 2008 results showed that over a third (37%) of research carried out at UWE Bristol was considered to be world-leading or internationally excellent. UWE Bristol has been granted the European Commission's HRExcellence in Research Award, which recognises the University's outstanding work in developing and supporting its research staff. Strong focus on employability – 95.5% of UWE Bristol graduates are in work or further study six months after graduating (DLHE 2015). UWE Bristol is investing £220m in infrastructure and facilities by 2020 to improve students’ experiences. This will include a new Business School building, new student accommodation, a central plaza and transport hub, and refurbished teaching and learning spaces.

Learning facilities include: a 24-hour computer lab, libraries on each Campus, a mock courtroom, a forensic Crime Scene House, a wind tunnel, a flight simulator, a financial trading room, and a host of specialist labs and studios. Social facilities include: a high-quality Centre for Sport, an on-campus cinema, a Centre for Performing Arts, a NatWest Bank, several bars, numerous shops and cafés. Disability Services. A brand-new £9.8m Students’ Union building opened in summer 2015.
Over 8,000 sports, societies and network members. Students can join over 160 different sports clubs, societies, community networks and volunteer activities.

The Students’ Union has over 1,200 student reps throughout the university. Every UWE campus has a Students’ Union run bar. The Students’ Union at UWE and the University won four awards at the South West Fairtrade Business Awards 2015, amongst which was Gold for Best Fairtrade Retailer. Last year the shop won Best in Category, which is one of the most highly contested categories. The Students’ Union Bars at UWE have been awarded gold in the Best Bar None scheme 2015, a national award supported by the Home Office and aimed at promoting responsible management and operation of alcohol licensed premises. The Students’ Union JobShop helps students find the right job to fit around their studies. Around 4,000 part-time jobs are advertised through our JobShop every year. The JobShop also offer tips on specific job hunting and advice on employment rights, tax, National Insurance, etc. More than 200 students undertake internships funded by UWE Bristol every year.
